Sergi Bruguera, the new Captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team.
Surely you have heard a lot about the new Spanish Davis Cup captain lately. but do you know who Sergi Bruguera is? Did you know that he is one of Spain’s biggest tennis legend? One of his most recent professional achievements is the appointment of captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team.
Years ago, his father Luis Bruguera already had been given this honour by the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation, who now expects Sergi to take the Spanish team back to the glory.
Sergi used to practice several sports when he was a kid, with a special affection for soccer. Growing older he decided to focus on tennis, being trained by his father and the Bruguera’s Tennis Academy technical team.
Getting the most out of the methodology of his father, Sergi Bruguera debuted as a professional tennis player in 1988, becoming one of the best of his time.
With time and mostly practicing on clay, this became his favourite surface so that it was not of big surprise that he reached the final of Roland Garros three times, winning two of them in a row, beating Pete Sampras and Jim Courier.
At the Atlanta Olympics Games in 1996, Sergi earned the silver medal against Agassi reaching at the same time rank 3, his highest position, in the ATP World Ranking.
Due to several injuries, Sergi had to withdraw from the professional tennis circuit as a pro tennis player, but always stayed in touch with it coaching other professional players such as Richard Gasquet.
We are confident that his leadership will steer the Spanish Davis Cup team to success and glory, adding more achievements to his career.
